Braille literacy has steeply declined in the United States since 1960. While there is no single solution, BELLA addresses one key factor: lack of access to affordable early braille educational material. Through interactive lessons and games, BELLA develops pre-braille, braille reading, and braille writing skills. BELLA’s low cost allows low-income students to explore braille as a path to literacy. Its open-source hardware and software encourage continued improvement and support by a community of stakeholders. BELLA is not limited to English-speaking countries, and its low cost makes it suitable for the world market. Open-source software invites interested parties to localize the device and curriculum. Open-source hardware also allows for local production of BELLA in markets with high tariffs.
